Weather Delay in Sullivan Bay

(Read more about Sullivan Bay.)

The odds finally caught up with us after several days of stunning weather and record-breaking temperatures. While it wasn't stormy here in port, out on Queen Charlotte Sound there were swells to 4 meters and threats of gale force winds...

Captain Kessler gave the news at a 4:15am skippers' briefing, and everyone agreed that it was not safe to travel as a group. Back to bed!

With an action-packed Grand Tour thus far, no one seemed to mind the weather day. It was a chance to catch up on those "little projects" on board our boats and to socialize at a slower pace. Folks checked out every inch of the floating town of Sullivan Bay, from the town brig to the gardens, the painted propane tanks and the hidden waterline "totem poles."

It's a delight to see all of the owners coming together as a group on this Grand Tour. People with very different backgrounds, different experiences, different histories - all coming together in a unique, exciting, and adventuresome spirit. The camaraderie is amazing, and the very enjoyment of cruising together has come to equal the inspiring beauty of the wilderness that surrounds us. It may sound corny, but this is something special. Whether it's our shared ownership of a Grand Banks or the shared experience of cruising the Inside Passage, this group is close-knit and supportive like no other. As a result, crossing the Strait tomorrow - if indeed weather permits - will be easier for it, and the experience and sense of community will stay with us for a lifetime.

Of course, such idealism is always tinged with a dose of hard reality, and folks on the Grand Tour got practical this afternoon with a Q&A session hosted by GB Service Support Director Fran Morey. People took advantage of having the GB Service Man front and center to ask all those Questions You Always Wanted Answered But Never Bothered To Ask. After a rousing discussion, Fran retired to the GB boat, grilled a couple of steaks for all of us crew members, and we called it an early night. Another 4am skippers' briefing was scheduled, and everyone wanted to get some extra rest for a possible crossing tomorrow - IF the weather cooperates. Stay tuned...
